Ward To Meet With Allegheny, First Energy Leaders Over Jobs

(Greensburg, Pa.) Senator Kim Ward (R-39th) will meet with Allegheny Energy CEO Paul J. Evanson and FirstEnergy CEO Anthony J. Alexander possibly as soon as next week to press them for protection of Allegheny Power employees in Westmoreland County.

"My immediate concern is about the number of jobs that could be moved out of our area or lost due to this merger. I will fight hard and do the best I can to keep the jobs here. No stone will be left unturned in this endeavor," Ward said after learning of the proposed merger of the two companies.

Ward said along with job preservation she is concerned that the merged company will become the single largest energy provider in the Commonwealth.

"The rate caps are due to come off in Pennsylvania in January of 2011 and I am concerned the effect this merger may have. This company will now be the largest energy provider in Pennsylvania and with that size comes a lot of influence over the market, so Pennsylvania needs to be sure there are proper checks and balances in place to protect our rate payers," she said.
