Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee and Senate Labor & Industry Committees to hold Joint Hearing on the State Workers Insurance Fund (SWIF)

The Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee and the Senate Labor & Industry Committee will hold a Joint Hearing on Wednesday (March 29), in Hearing Room 1 of the North Office Building, according to Committee Chairman Senator Randy Vulakovich.  The hearing will be on the State Workers Insurance Fund and the Impact of the Cancer Presumption Act (Act 46 of 2011).

“In 2011, the General Assembly passed and the Governor signed into law Act 46 of 2011, established that when a firefighter is diagnosed with cancer, that cancer is presumed to have been caused by work-related exposure,” said Sen. Vulakovich.  “Unfortunately, many municipalities were dropped from their insurance provider.  As such, they had to go into the State Workers Insurance Fund, the insurer of last resort.  Today we’re going to take a look into how SWIF has been working or not working for our first responders.”

Testimony will be heard from the Department of Labor & Industry, the PA State Association of Boroughs, the PA State Association of Township Commissioners/PA Municipal League, the PA Sate Association of Township Supervisors, the State Fire Commissioner, the PA Fire & Emergency Services Institute, the Career Fire Chiefs Association, and a panel of fire fighters.
